The Nature Of Great Nature Photos – 5 Tips To Improve Your Outdoor Photography

“We cannot command nature except by obeying her.” Francis Bacon
Whether you’re taking a picture of a geranium in your backyard garden or a grizzly bear in the Rocky Mountains, capturing a great photo outdoors means working with Mother Nature, and not trying to impose your photographic will upon her.
So many factors come into play when taking a nature photograph … sun, clouds, wind, rain, sleet or snow … and if you’re photographing animals in their native habitat, you’ve got noise, odors, and movement to deal with.
It can get complex, but the enjoyment you’ll get by taking nature photography seriously will far outweigh the extra time and effort you put into it. Rather than just clicking a snapshot of your sugar maple in all its fall glory, you’ll have a photo you’d be proud to hang on your wall as a piece of art. Or, you might even become so good that you’ll find yourself selling some of your better photos.
After all, everyone loves a great nature photo. It’s easy for viewers to put themselves into the picture. Even if they’ve never been to the mountains, people enjoy looking at pictures of mountains because it transports them, at least for a brief moment, to a peaceful place.
So in order to help you get the most out of the time you spend outdoors with your camera, here are five fundamental tips for taking better nature photos. As a photographer, I’ve learned that if you approach your outdoor photography with the right mindset, you are certain to succeed -- oftentimes in ways you never expected.
Tip number one: Understand the nature of nature. There’s an old saying, “You can’t fight Mother Nature.” Plan on working with the elements of the natural environment you photograph. A backyard squirrel might not blink at the sound of your shutter. But a rarely seen black squirrel sitting in the woods 50 miles from the nearest road might run upon hearing the same click.
Animals, trees, bushes, grass … everything associated with nature functions uniquely in different weather conditions. If you’re looking for a “money” shot, you need to understand the conditions you’re working in, and the subject matter you’re photographing.
I recall walking along a large pond in a forest clearing many years ago. I was looking up for a shot, but saw nothing remarkable. Then I looked down and realized there was a fantastic shot right at my feet. It was of some green algae that had formed in the corner of the pond. It was a beautiful color, and contrasted nicely with the water. Itended up being one of my most popular shots.
Tip number two: Be prepared. Study the area you plan on photographing, even if it’s your own backyard. Watch how the light plays on your flowers at different times of the day, and under different cloud conditions. Pay attention to the patterns of birds. Animals are creatures of habit, and weather and light is somewhat predictable.
The same goes if you plan on venturing out into the wilderness. Get familiar with the local surroundings by talking to locals, watching weather reports on the Internet or TV, and by just taking some time to familiarize yourself with your surroundings.
Tip number three: Know you’re equipment. If you’re trying to get a close up shot of a deer in the wild, even if you’re using a telephoto lens, turn off your autofocus, autoflash and motordrive. Get to know you’re camera settings, from the f-stop and shutter speed to the ASA and ISO settings.
Experiment at home and in the field. After buying a new camera, I like to take number shots just around the house, in a variety of conditions. Spend about an hour or so walking around your home and yard, instruction manual in hand, and try out all the features. Use different exposures and settings. Do this as a refresher from time to time as well. It is well worth the effort.
Tip number four: Be patient. Natural events happen when they happen. You are not going to rush that beaver out of his watery den any faster. The perfect glint of sunlight playing off your prize rose bushes will not happen any sooner or later than you want it to. Keep your camera at the ready, and don’t force the shot. You may arrive five minutes too late for a great shot, but you may be five minutes early for the perfect shot.
Tip number five: Have an outcome in mind, but be ready for the unexpected. If you go out looking for cardinals in the forest, you’re likely to find some. So be ready by having a telephoto lens, a tripod if necessary, perhaps a birding book to help with recognition, and something comfortable to sit on. Take food for yourself – don’t feed the animals! – and water. Picture the shot you want in your mind’s eye. You’ll often get something close.
But don’t close your mind to other possibilities. The sun may be absolutely perfect at that time of day, and you could get a stunning picture of rays of sunlight piercing the forest canopy. Ansel Adams’ famous “Moonrise over Hernandez” was taken while he was driving down a highway. He stopped the car, jumped out, grabbed his camera, took one shot … and nailed it because he was ready for the unexpected.
I had a similar experience. It was night, and I was just walking around the area I live looking for a good picture. I had been walking awhile, ready to give up and go home, when a flash of light caught my eye. I came upon a construction site of a multi-story building. The welders were getting in some overtime, working on the 8th or 9th floor. The sparks from their welding were arcing out from the side of the building and down to the ground. It made for a beautiful picture, and one I would have never gotten if I hadn’t been ready for the unexpected.
When it comes to photographing anything in the great outdoors, don’t let yourself be fooled into thinking you can control your subject matter. All you can control is your equipment and your knowledge about the subject matter. So with the right camera, an understanding of nature, and some patience, you’re likely to get the recognition you’re looking for as an outstanding outdoor photographer.

What Health Reform Means for You

1. What's happened so far. Health can no longer impose lifetime caps on coverage, a boon for those with expensive chronic health problems like cancer or heart who find themselves bankrupt after their insurance runs out. Parents who have group policies through their employers are allowed to continue coverage for their unmarried children, as noted above—a pressing need especially now, with unemployment sky-high among recent college graduates. Health insurers must cover certain preventive services like osteoporosis screening for women over 65, smoking cessation counseling and interventions, colonoscopies, high blood pressure screening, and screenings for diabetes and sexually transmitted diseases. Seniors were previously required to pay part of the cost of Medicare services, including cancer screenings and annual physicals, but the law makes such preventive services free for most beneficiaries. People with serious health conditions that have prevented them from obtaining coverage will be eligible to purchase a policy from a high-risk pool in a government-subsidized exchange, at a cost similar to what healthy folks pay for their premiums. (Private insurers can still deny applicants based on pre-existing conditions up until 2014, when the exchanges open.)

2. You will have to if you don't have any, or face a penalty. As of 2014, anyone who is currently uninsured must purchase a policy or pay a penalty. Individuals who don't qualify for government subsidies should expect to pay about $5,000 a year for a policy on the exchange, while families should expect to pay about $15,000, according to John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a nonprofit public policy research organization based in Dallas. (Subsidies to reduce these premiums will be available for individuals making between about $15,000 and $43,000 and for families making up to nearly $90,000 on a sliding scale based on income. Subsidized plans for a family of four, for example, range from $1,300 per year up to $8,400 per year.) The penalty starts at $95 or up to 1 percent of income for individuals, whichever is greater, and in 2016 rises to $695 or 2.5 percent of income, whichever is greater. Families pay heftier fines—$2,085 or 2.5 percent of income by 2016. "Many are arguing that these fines aren't high enough," Goodman says, "and that middle-class families may simply choose to go without insurance and pay the fine."
3. You won't lose coverage if you suddenly get sick, or be denied a new policy because of a pre-existing condition. Starting in 2014, insurers won't be able to deny applicants based on, say, an earlier diagnosis of cancer. And they're already no longer able to drop existing policyholders unless they can spot a clear case of fraud—like someone who failed to disclose that earlier case of cancer. In the past, insurance companies often rescrubbed policies after individuals were diagnosed with expensive health conditions.
4. You can expect longer waits to see a new doctor. That's the downside of providing millions of Americans with more access to care without concurrently increasing the number of healthcare workers. In Massachusetts, where health insurance is universal, Boston residents have to wait about twice as long to see a doctor as people in any other U.S. city, says Goodman. Over time, though, increased demand and employment opportunities could bring more doctors and nurses flooding into the workforce, helping to alleviate this problem.

Health Care And Health Insurance Costs Can Be Controlled Through Lifestyle Choices

As you probably know all to well, the cost of healthcare and health insurance premiums continue to increase at levels substantially above the general inflation rate. The reasons given for these extraordinary cost increases are numerous and include: technological advancements in the medical field, increased demand for medical services and prescription drugs, the aging of the population, cost shifting caused by the uninsured and governmental reimbursement rates, state and federal mandates, and costs associated with medical related lawsuits.
As individual consumers, we have very little control over some of the factors contributing to the cost of healthcare. However, all of us have control over lifestyle related health insurance claims. A simple formula of eating a balanced diet, getting the appropriate amount of daily exercise, participating in annual physicals and other recommended routine care, limiting alcohol consumption, and eliminating the use of tobacco products will no doubt reduce our personal healthcare costs. In addition to reducing medical costs, the other benefits of following such a formula include more energy, self confidence, less stress, and increased productivity. If you are not doing so already, I encourage you to consider practical ways to promote a healthy lifestyle for you and your family. For example, one of the individual health insurance companies my organization works with has an option that will offset 25% of the annual cost of a health club membership. Simple things such as taking a walk, bike ride, or going swimming promote both a healthy body and mind. If you have a sweet tooth, consider limiting yourself to eating desert once a week. You will enjoy it more and your body will thank you.
Health insurance premiums will continue to increase as long as the cost of healthcare continues to go up. The best way to reduce the overall cost of healthcare is to decrease our need for healthcare. Healthy lifestyle choices and prudent use of the healthcare system are the best and easiest ways to get a handle on our healthcare expenditures. Perhaps the greatest benefit of a healthy lifestyle is our ability to enjoy our precious time here on earth to the fullest.

Nature’s Health And Wellness

The world that we live in is filled with great gifts from nature that aid in our health and wellness. These wonderful natural resources abound, however not too many of us know the basics about where to find them or how to use them to improve ourselves and our well being.
We are offered products all the time that tout the great things they can do for us. We hear about how they can improve our physical appearance, help us feel better and improve our lives, but all too often, these great products are filled with additives and preservatives. These added ingredients might irritate our skin and cause problems in our bodies.
Our love of and faith in science can explain why many of us choose synthetic chemicals over natural products. We believe that with science, nearly anything is possible and that if the “scientific experts” have created a product, it is somehow better for us and safer to use.
While science does indeed benefit humanity enormously, sometimes it does not produce the healthy ingredients that we expect. Sure, the preservatives and other ingredients used in many products give them a longer shelf life, but what are they doing to our bodies?
We use all kinds of cosmetic products and later hear media reports explaining how they contain substances that may be harming us. With the recent reports of high amounts of lead in lipstick to the use of hydrogenated oils in our food being linked to heart disease, it’s difficult to know which products and foods are safe and healthy to use.
Fortunately, we can find trustworthy and healthful products that are derived from the very force that has been caring for and fueling us since the beginning of human times: nature.
We can eat organic produce and Herbs that are grown with abundant sunshine and pure water. We can use hair formulas and toiletries that are made from natural ingredients, and see and feel the effects that these wholesome products have on our bodies almost immediately.
These powerfully healthy foods and products provide our bodies with valuable Vitamins and meet many of our other essential nutritional needs, but in today’s fast-paced world, many of us do not have time to fix fresh, home cooked organic meals. The produce and other ingredients can be expensive and time consuming to prepare.
Many of us are trying to eat as healthfully as possible and wish to reap the benefits of using natural vitamin supplements to boost the nutritional value of our diets. We buy Discount Vitamins and Discount Herbs to save money and ensure that we are taking much-needed nutrients into our bodies on a consistent basis.
While these vitamins can aid us in keeping our bodies healthy, they are not meant to treat disease, however several studies have shown that they may protect us against some diseases.
Antioxidants found in many vitamin supplements prevent or slow the oxidation or free radical production in our bodies that is known to damage cells. This cell damage prevention can aid in keeping us looking and feeling better on the inside and out.
We can find vitamins and supplements at almost any store, but a better place to look for healthy and discounted natural vitamins and supplements is online. A quick web search will find Vitamin Sales and Herbal Sales that save us money and time. Many web sites offer the finest in natural heath care products at deeply discounted prices.
Whether we are searching for natural bladder supplements, such as Echinacea with its antiseptic and antiviral properties to help fight off bladder infections, or brain nutrition, such as foliate and b-vitamins to keep us sharp, we can find it all for sale online or at our local vitamin or health food stores.
The advantage of shopping online is that we can compare many products at once and research these products using helpful online guides and references to find the best natural products for us. Also, there is no need to wait in lines to speak with a clerk who may or may not be able to help.
When we are looking for digestive supplements, joint support, weight loss products such as healthy alternative sweeteners or any natural products to support and boost our health, we can find the information that we need about them online and almost instantly.
These online guides are free to use and with them we can discover very insightful information such as how essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 work to keep our hearts and brains healthy and how coenzyme q10 helps to keep us energized.
This invaluable wealth of information is available at our fingertips. It allows us to more easily discover the vitamins and herbs that can benefit our health and wellness, which are derived from the natural world.
It’s an exciting time to live in as we have in the past moved so far away from nature, but are now discovering how far away from health that path has taken us. Luckily, nature is welcoming us home again with open arms and healthy alternatives.

Mommy & Baby: How To Establish Good Sleeping Patterns

Do you want your child to be smart and excel? Help him to establish healthy nighttime sleep patterns as an infant! It sounds lofty and unattainable, but I assure you, it is not.

Dr. Marc Weissbluth, author of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, references the intelligence research of Dr. Lewis M. Terman. Dr. Terman’s research, completed in 1925, is unchallenged even today, according to Dr. Weissbluth. Using the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test, Terman looked at over 3,000 children. In every case of superior intelligence, there was one singular link: all of them experienced healthy sleep at night.

Fatigue is the primary cause of fussiness, daytime irritability, crankiness, discontentment, colic-like symptoms, hypertension, poor focusing skills, and poor eating habits. In fact, some researchers even believe there is a cause-and-effect relationship with poor sleeping habits and the increasing rate of Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD).

Now that we’ve established the importance of achieving good nighttime sleep, let’s talk about some things that get in the way of it:

 Intentionally nursing your baby to sleep: this practice, although it can be comforting, provides an unnecessary dependence on mommy to fall asleep and prevents your baby from learning how to fall asleep on his own.
Rocking your baby to sleep: it used to be just a rocking chair, but now parents will put a bouncy seat on the dryer or take their baby for a ride in the car to encourage sleep. While these droning noises and motions do encourage sleep, your baby will quickly wake up and be unable to fall asleep again without the motion that encouraged him to drop off in the first place.
Shared sleep: sleeping with your baby puts him at physical and emotional risk. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, bed-sharing might actually increase the risk of SIDS. Additionally, there is the risk that your child might develop long-term sleep disruption from co-sleeping. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School have noted that the families with the most sleep-disorders in their children are also those who practice co-sleeping.

Natural Cleaning Products for The Home

Natural cleaning products are better for both the indoor and outdoor environment and are cheaper than alternatives. A majority of the cleaning products you can buy at your local market consist of chemicals that are unhealthy to breathe and touch regularly. You can make healthy natural cleaning products with items you can find around the house.

Baking soda makes a great cleaning agent. It cleans as well as gets rid of unwanted odors. It can be used to scour various surfaces and isnt as abrasive as other products.

Soap is another natural cleaning product that will take care of many messes. Much of what you can buy is biodegradable and is therefore healthier for the environment. You can also clean just about all surface types with just plain soap.

Lemon is another great natural cleaning product that works against bacteria. It also makes the house smell very pleasant.

White vinegar is used for several purposes. It works very well for removing unwanted grease from surfaces and removes mold, stains and unwanted odors.

Cornstarch is a product that has many different uses. It makes a great furniture polish; you can use it when cleaning windows; you can even use it to shampoo your carpet.

There are many household products that can be used to serve a wide array of purposes. For example, you can use one type of product to clean a sink in the kitchen as well as in the bathroom. Natural products carry a feeling of overall cleanliness while helping you achieve the immaculate home you have grown used to over the years.

Before using certain natural products on materials such as fiberglass, make sure they arent too abrasive and dont contain an ingredient that could otherwise be harmful to fiberglass surfaces. Likewise, make sure that any natural products you use wont remove paint from surfaces.

There are many ways to maintain a clean home, and using natural products will help you do this without harming you, your family or the environment. The best part is you wont have to go out and buy cleaning products; chances are, you already have many of them in your home. Your family deserves a long and healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Skin Needs Natural Mineral Makeup

For those of you women who want healthy skin but can’t seem to go without a little blush and eye shadow, there’s makeup made from pure minerals that can present your face a natural alternative to the drugstore cosmetics. This mineral makeup opens up a world of makeup that is both natural and stylish. There are five main reasons to begin using mineral makeup immediately.
First of all, mineral makeup lets your skin breathe. Regular makeup can lead to ugly breakouts for a lot of women. This is because a woman’s skin can be very picky about what is put on it. Anything that is too heavy will block pores and potentially lead to pimple development. Mineral makeup is extremely light, which makes it a popular option among women with sensitive skin. This lightness also means that you can occasionally wear the makeup to bed without paying the price the following morning. However, it is not suggested that you wear the makeup to bed.
Mineral makeup feels better than regular makeup. Some makeup formulations can leave you feeling extremely oily. A lot of women who use mineral makeup are finding that the uncomfortable mask-like greasy feel of traditional makeup is not there. Without the mineral oils, talc, and other weighty ingredients that are found in traditional makeup products, mineral makeup is a lot more comfortable. If your complexion is oily to begin with, mineral-based products are especially helpful.
Thirdly, mineral makeup is better for your health. Although your skin is a great barrier to the outside world, it isn’t totally immune from impurities. You can and do absorb a good amount of stuff through your skin, including the chemical ingredients that are found in regular makeup such as alcohol, dyes, fragrances, and fillers. Mineral makeup is made up of mostly finely pulverized minerals and natural coloring agents. Zinc is a common ingredient, as it soothes red, inflamed skin, and provides protection against the sun’s UV rays.
Mineral makeup also helps you to avoid infections. This is a lesser known, but definitely appealing fact. Regular makeup can become a Petri dish for microorganisms such as bacteria, mold, and yeast. By nature, minerals are inorganic and therefore, are a lot less likely to breed these microorganisms. However, that assumes that you follow beauty hygiene basics like washing your hands before working on your face, using clean brushes, and maintaining a reasonably sanitary area to store your cosmetics.
Lastly, mineral makeup allows you to look your best. Most of you are probably thinking that it is nice that mineral makeup won’t ruin your skin, but will it really do what it’s suppose to do in the first place as a makeup. The answer is yes. Minerals refract light, which gives your face a glow while still making crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles less noticeable. Many brands also supply a complete line of products, which include blush, bronzer, concealer, eye color, and foundation. This allows you to achieve a full range of skin effects. To use mineral makeup, it is best to apply it in very sheer layers. To learn more about mineral makeup, contact your local health food store.

Natural Ways to Keep Healthy

There are a lot of different ways to keep healthy amidst all the diseases and stress in the world today. In fact, keeping healthy can be done by simply doing small modifications in your lifestyle. You may not notice it at first, but once it becomes a habit, you will begin seeing the positive effects these small changes can bring about to your health. Here are some tiny tips to improve your health and stay healthy all the way.
The first one is to incorporate fruits and vegetables in your diet. The benefits of these foods have been stressed over and over again not just by your parents and teachers but even by the world around you. There has not been a person in the world who can tell you that these foods are bad for your health. Just take a look at the food that healthy people eat and you will easily notice that fruits and vegetables top the list of their must-have foods.
Another way to keep healthy is to drink lots of water, at least eight to ten glasses per day. Water is a very powerful substance that can do lots of wonders to your health. You may already have heard of people doing water therapy and reaping enormous benefits out of it. That is because drinking lots of water flushes out the toxins in your body, leaving you with a refreshed feeling. It can also give you energy and can surprisingly be a great substitute for caffeine.
Needless to say, another secret to keep healthy is to relax and not let stress take its toll on you. Although stress is a part of life, lots of stress can be very unhealthy if you do not know how to manage it. At worst, it can cause psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and binge eating. It can even lead to physiological ones like heart attacks and stroke. So in order to avoid these, make sure that you take a breather from time to time. Devote some time to relaxation, whether by yourself or with your family. Also, practice positive thinking so that you can better handle stressful situations.
On the other hand, too much relaxation and sleep can make you lazy and devoid of energy. You have to counteract this by incorporating physical activities in your lifestyle. Of course, exercise is always a part of staying healthy. If you are not a fitness buff, you can still keep healthy by walking for thirty minutes per day. You will be amazed at the advantages that simple walking can give you, such as better cardiovascular health and circulation, and reduction of body fat. Doing simple household chores can also give you your daily dose of exercise.
Just following the aforementioned steps makes staying healthy a breeze. However, you have to remember that these will not work in the long run if you do not follow them religiously. Make these health tips a habit and you will surely be able to keep healthy in body and mind.

Get Back To Nature With An Alternative Health Supplements

With obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other ailments on the rise, it is no wonder that there are tons of synthetically formulated concoctions purported to help us lose fat, gain muscle mass, boost the immune system, increase the respiratory system's efficiency, and so on. But with such a push for healthy bodies, why are so many of these "healthy" supplements made up of ingredients that do not occur outside of a laboratory?
To be certain, it is great that you want to boost your health. But think about an alternative health supplement before you place a mail order for the newest pills on the market. After all, doesn't nature know better than all of those unpronounceable chemicals? Consider this: if the reason you are purchasing man-made supplements is to feel good and be healthy, then would it not make more sense to consume all natural health boosters as an alternative health supplement?
Think about it - Chinese medicine has always relied on naturally occurring herbs, oils, and so forth for boosting the health. How many supplements are billed as using traditional Chinese medicinal therapies for inspiration? There must be a reason. The Chinese, did, in fact, figure out thousands of years ago that an alternative health supplement created from natural ingredients can be used not only to heal and improve the body, but they can also be used in lieu of adding more unnatural substances to the body. Again, it seems nature knows better than any synthetic chemical how best to support the human machine.
Overall, an alternative health supplement is the best choice for getting back to nature and back to healthy living. Chemicals and foreign substances are what need to be taken out of the body, not added to it. An alternative health supplement is just the answer to a healthy body and clean living. Natural herbs, natural oils, natural plants and flowers and seeds - these are the medicines and therapies that the human body can thrive on, rather than artificially created ones. Nature made is best for supporting the health of the body, and an alternative health supplement will support that means to an end.

Absolutely can not eat eggs, the four risk

Eggs in our diet plays a large part of the ratio, many people eat an egg almost every day, the nutritional value of eggs is very high, but health experts remind us that: some can not eat eggs, then what kind of eggs can not eat?

1, stillbirth eggs:

Eggs in the incubation process due to contamination by bacteria or parasites, coupled with temperature and humidity conditions, poor and other reasons, resulting in embryonic development of eggs, said stop stillbirth eggs. This egg contains nutrients has changed, such as death over a long time, protein is broken down will produce a variety of toxic substances, it is unfit for human consumption.

2, rotten eggs:

As the bacteria multiply within the egg invasion, resulting in deterioration, eggshell black gray, even the shell due to internal expansion and rupture of hydrogen sulfide gas, a mixture of grayish egg in dark green or yellow, with a bad smell, then this can not eat eggs, otherwise it will cause bacterial food poisoning.

3, crack the egg:

Eggs in the transport, storage and packaging process, due to vibration, extrusion and other reasons, some eggs will cause cracks, cracks, very susceptible to bacterial invasion, if it would be inappropriate to place a long time eating.

4, scattered yellow egg:

If the scattered yellow is not serious, no odor, the boiling even after high temperature treatment such as food, but the body such as bacteria multiply in the egg, the protein has been denatured, the smell not eat.

Checklist - Four Natural Sweeteners, Healthy Alternatives to Sugar

1.  Stevia

Stevia is a wonderful alternative for sweetening.  Stevia is a herb that is a part of the sunflower family and is commonly known as sweetleaf, sweet leaf, sugarleaf, or simply stevia.  It is widely grown for its sweet leaves.  Its extracts have up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar and because it has a negligible effect on blood glucose and is known to enhance glucose tolerance, it is a much better choice than artificial sugars like Aspartame, Nutrasweet, Equal, Splenda, Sucralose, for people who are diabetic.

Stevia in most forms, other than the white powered forms, gives a long even energy and works in the body like a complex carb.  It is important to note that many of the extracts, are processed with alcohol and do not keep the plant properties intact; therefore it is important to pay close attention to how the stevia you may use is processed.

If you are a baker and wonder what you can use as a sweetener that is a healthier alternative, then Rapadura or Sucanat are good choices. They are both natural sugars which have many of the minerals, vitamins and nutritional value still intact.

2. Rapadura

Rapadura is a dried sugarcane juice that is common in Latin American countries, that comes in the form of a brick. It is the perfect unbleached, unrefined sweetener to use in place of refined sugars. And the unique processing of Rapadura gives it a mild, caramel-like flavor which is superb for baking and sweetening food and drinks.

3. Sucanut

Sucanut is a non-refined cane sugar that, unlike white sugar, is a pure dried cane sugar, retains its molasses content. Of all the major sugars derived from sugar cane, Sucanut ranks highest in nutritional value; although, as with most sugars, it is not a significant source of any nutrient apart from carbohydrate.

4.  Agave Nectar

Finally there is Agave Nectar, a sweetener that acts as a complex carb instead of a simple one. It is derived from a plant and due to its fructose content, Agave Nectar is remarkable in that its Glycemic Index (GI) and glycemic load are lower than most, if not all natural sweeteners on the market. This makes it a good alternative to honey as honey has a high GI.  Agave Nectar also naturally contains quantities of Iron, Calcium, Potassium & Magnesium which why it has the color it does.

There are other alternatives such as molasses, honey and maple syrup. However, due to some negative properties such as the fact that they can raise blood sugar quickly, they are not the best choices for a healthy sweetener; although they are still healthier alternatives to refined white sugar.

Fact Sheets Home Health Care

As with any important purchase, it is always a good idea to talk with friends, neighbors, and your local area agency on aging to learn more about the home health care agencies in your community.
In looking for a home health care agency, the following 20 questions can be used to help guide your search:
  1. How long has the agency been serving this community?
  2. Does the agency have any printed brochures describing the services it offers and how much they cost? If so, get one.
  3. Is the agency an approved Medicare provider?
  4. Is the quality of care certified by a national accrediting body such as the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations?
  5. Does the agency have a current license to practice (if required in the state where you live)?
  6. Does the agency offer seniors a “Patients’ Bill of Rights” that describes the rights and responsibilities of both the agency and the senior being cared for?
  7. Does the agency write a plan of care for the patient (with input from the patient, his or her doctor and family), and update the plan as necessary?
  8. Does the care plan outline the patient’s course of treatment, describing the specific tasks to be performed by each caregiver?
  9. How closely do supervisors oversee care to ensure quality?
  10. Will agency caregivers keep family members informed about the kind of care their loved one is getting?
  11. Are agency staff members available around the clock, seven days a week, if necessary?
  12. Does the agency have a nursing supervisor available to provide on-call assistance 24 hours a day?
  13. How does the agency ensure patient confidentiality?
  14. How are agency caregivers hired and trained?
  15. What is the procedure for resolving problems when they occur, and who can I call with questions or complaints?
  16. How does the agency handle billing?
  17. Is there a sliding fee schedule based on ability to pay, and is financial assistance available to pay for services?
  18. Will the agency provide a list of references for its caregivers?
  19. Who does the agency call if the home health care worker cannot come when scheduled?
  20. What type of employee screening is done?
When purchasing home health care directly from an individual provider (instead of through an agency), it is even more important to screen the person thoroughly. This should include an interview with the home health caregiver to make sure that he or she is qualified for the job. You should request references. Also, prepare for the interview by making a list if any special needs the senior might have. For example, you would want to note whether the elderly patient needs help getting into or out of a wheelchair. Clearly, if this is the case, the home health caregiver must be able to provide that assistance. The screening process will go easier if you have a better ide

Expanding The Palace Now Could Prevent Further Young Fussy Eating

One of the biggest pet peeves to eat outside of my family are the children's menu. Many times I end up ordering food to their menu of adults, because the variety of their menu leaves much to be desired. I have to bite my tongue to keep saying that the manager of the restaurant's spaghetti with butter and corn dogs are a staple diet of every child, and that is good to offer something other than chips for more than half of the product. I realize that not every parent wants to order food for me, but at least there are more options would be nice.

My kids do not like any food you try them out, is something the restaurant or something you cook at home. I try to make them a great variety of foods, because I do not want them to know that there's more to life than pizza and grilled cheese. Sometimes it works well. For example, my daughter loves blacks beans and my son is happy to eat zucchini. (These are not particularly weird food, the only things some children do not eat.) Sometimes the strategy does not work very well. We've had nights when I make dinner, take a look and say "I do not want to eat." But I'll try. Studies show that young children use a wide range of food and even eating different foods during pregnancy may make them willing to try more food they get older.

Vitamin E

The fat-soluble vitamin E actually describes a group of eight related compounds called tocopherols. Here are six health benefits of vitamin E.

Antioxidants
Vitamin E, along with other vitamins C, B3, selenium and glutathione, battle against oxidative stress caused by free radicals within our bodies. If not properly checked, the free radicals can damage our cells and possibly lead to diseases such as atherosclerosis and cancer.

Skin Protection
Whether applied topically or ingested, vitamin E has been conclusively shown to protect our skin from ultraviolet radiation, thus guarding us from both skin cancer and premature aging.

Cancer Prevention
Studies have reported that a diet rich in vitamin E may lessen the probability of bladder cancer (the fourth leading cancer killer among men) by nearly 50%. Whereas alpha-tocopherol prevents bladder cancer, the combination of and gamma- and delta-tocopherol checks the onset of prostate cancer by effectively causing the cancerous cell to self-destruct without harming neighboring healthy cells.

Metabolism Booster
Vitamin E interrupts the development of nitrosamines (carcinogens formed in the stomach), which improves the body's metabolic function.

Anti-Inflammatory
Research has also shown that gamma-tocopherol possesses anti-inflammatory effects that can combat arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, and other inflammatory disorders linked to chronic inflammation.

Alzheimer's Disease
A recent study at Rush University showed that a vitamin high in vitamin E (a combination of tocopherol forms, not including alpha-tocopherol) lowered the risk of Alzheimer's Disease by 67% in subjects.

How to Can Vegetables

Canning is the easiest way to preserve home grown vegetables and fruits for a longer period, when they are harvested in large amounts. Also, most of the fresh food items are seasonal, meaning they are available only during their peak seasons. Thus, correct preservation of vegetables is a simple way to ensure their continuous supply, even in off seasons. For those who don't own vegetable gardens, purchase fresh veggies from the local market and preserve them for winter months.

Vegetable Canning Basics

While canned beans, fruits and vegetables are readily available in the market, they contain food preserving additives. Also, they come with a high price tag. Thus, canning on your own with a home canning equipment is a better approach to enjoy healthy foods without preservatives. The procedure for home canning is not as difficult as it sounds. But, how does canning work? The procedure involves killing microbes that spoil food by heating and expelling air from the canning jar. These two factors help in preserving the food nutrients until you open the jar for consumption.

How to Can Vegetables at Home?

Before we actually start discussing the canning tips, let me tell you about the equipment used in this preservation method. You have two options, boiling-water canner and pressure canner. The former is a simple, large sized pot that has enough room to hold jars and cover them with water. The latter is a specialized pot designed to create very high temperature inside it. While both can be used for canning vegetables, a pressure canner is more feasible than the boiling-water canner. Here's a step-by-step guide to can vegetables with a pressure canner.

Alternatives to La Mer Creme

Creme de la Mer is a nutrient-rich facial cream designed for healing scars, wrinkles and extreme dryness. Sea kelp is the main ingredient, along with petrolatum, eucalyptus oil, and glycerin. The creme is extremely expensive, ranging from $135 an ounce to $1650 for 16.5 ounces. The product is sold at high-end stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue.
  1. Alternative Skin Care Products with Sea Kelp

    • Sea kelp, or seaweed, is a nutrient-rich plant that grows in the ocean. The plant is used in many skin care products and shampoos. Alba Botanica makes a sea kelp toner that smooths the skin. Sea Legend by Naturally also offers a kelp-based lotion that reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Lubriderm Skin Nourishing Lotion with sea kelp extract is available in most discount supermarket chains.

    Scar Reducing Lotions

    • Scar reducing lotions minimize the appearance of scars. Most scar reducing creams moisturize the skin deeply to allow it to repair itself. La Mer's thick, rich cream provides moisture density that penetrates and heals scars. Weleda's Skin Food is a deeply hydrating cream that effectively moisturizes scarred or broken skin. With continued use, scars and scrapes heal leaving only the faintest marks. Scar reducers can be purchased by prescription or at drugstores over the counter.

    Wrinkle Fighters

    • Several wrinkle fighting creams are available at the local drugstore. Look for products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, retinoids, topical vitamin C, idebenone and pentapeptides. Alternatively, try facial exersise . Carolyn's Facial fitness work-out program can be ordered online for a fraction of the cost of La Mer's beauty creme. Enthusiasts believe that facial exercises reduce the visibility and creation of wrinkles. Facial exercises are believed to stimulate collagen buildup for firm, toned skin.

    Extremely Dry Skin

    • La Mer is touted for healing extremely dry skin. However, the Mayo Clinic recommends Cetaphil and Eucerine, both extremely thick moisturizers that can be applied directly after bathing. The Mayo Clinic staff also recommends treating dry skin with body oils, olive oil or baby oil, which can be absorbed by the skin for better results.

10 Tasty, Easy and Healthy Breakfast Ideas
    * Too sugary or carb-filled. Pancakes, waffles, toast, donuts, pastries, scones, bagels, pies, sugar cereals, breakfast bars, muffins (which, let’s face it, are usually just cake). I’m not anti-carb, but the problem with many breakfasts is that they are low in fat and protein, and nothing but empty carb calories. This starts your day with a high blood-sugar level, which your body will quickly adjust for and drop, and you’ll be on a roller-coaster blood-sugar ride all day.
    * Too fatty. Fried eggs, sausages, bacon, cream cheese on your bagels, cheesy omelets, Egg McMuffins, Sausage McMuffins, hash browns, anything English or Scottish.

What does that leave us with? Actually, there are a lot of options. The 10 below are just a few ideas, but I’m sure you can think of many more. Look for protein without too much saturated fat. Look for whole-grain carbs. Look for low-fat dairy or soy options. Look for fiber and nutrients.

But how do you find the time? You make the time. Get up 15 minutes earlier. Pack something to eat on the road or when you first get to work. Prepare it the night before if necessary. I recommend the first option — waking a little earlier — as it’s nice to be able to have a nice cup of tea or coffee with your breakfast, relaxing before the rush of the day starts.

Oatmeal, flaxseed, blueberries & almonds. To me, this is the perfect breakfast. Steel-cut oatmeal is probably the healthier choice, but if you are in a hurry, the instant kind will do fine (it doesn’t have as much fiber, but the other ingredients make up for that). After microwaving the oatmeal, add ground flaxseed, frozen blueberries, sliced almonds. You can add a little cinnamon and honey (not a lot) if you’re using the non-instant oatmeal. That’s four power foods, full of fiber and nutrients and protein and good fats, with only a couple of minutes of prep time. And very tasty!

Kashi Golean Crunch. Actually, any whole-grain, high-fiber cereal is a good choice, but I mention this particular one because it’s a favorite of mine. It has a high amount of protein and fiber, low sugar. Add low-fat milk or soy milk (which has 1/3 the saturated fat of 1% milk), perhaps some berries if you like.

Scrambled tofu. Healthier than scrambled eggs. Add some onions, green peppers or other veggies, some light soy sauce or tamari, maybe some garlic powder, and black pepper, stir-fry with a little olive oil. Eat with whole-grain toast. Fast and delicious.

Fresh berries, yogurt, granola. Get low-fat yogurt (not non-fat, as it often has too much sugar) or soy yogurt, cut up some berries or other fruits, add some healthy cereal. I actually use the Kashi Golean Crunch instead of granola, as many brands of granola have way too much fat and/or sugar.

Grapefruit with whole-wheat toast & almond butter. Add a little sugar on top of the grapefruit, and it’s actually pretty good. The almond butter is healthier than peanut-butter, with lots of good protein to fill you up.

Fresh fruit salad. Cut up some apples, melons, berries, oranges, pears, bananas, grapes … any or all or whatever your favorite fruits are. Add a little bit of lime or lemon juice. Perfect.

Protein shake with extras. I use soy protein powder, but whey works well too. Blend up with low-fat milk or soy milk, some frozen blueberries, and perhaps some almond butter or oatmeal. That may sound weird, but it’s actually pretty good, and pretty filling. A little ground flax seed works well too.

Eggs with peppers. I’m not a fan of eggs, but many people love them. Egg whites are healthier than whole eggs. Scramble with a little olive oil, red and green bell peppers, maybe broccoli, onions, black pepper. Goes well with whole-wheat toast.

Cottage cheese and fruit. Get low-fat cottage cheese. Add any kind of fruit. Apples, citrus, berries.

Gibb’s muffins & jam. While most muffins you buy at a coffee shop or grocery store are just empty carbs with lots of fat (basically, cake), this is a delicious recipe with lots of fiber and nutrition. (Note: the recipe in the link doesn’t mention it, but it’s actually a recipe from Simplify Your Life by Elaine St. James — it’s her husband Gibbs’ recipe). Bake them the night before, and they’re perfect in the morning (and for days to come). A little honey or jam makes them perfect.

Health.com

As health becomes the number one issue, politically, socially, economically, and personally, there is nothing on the current horizon of products or services available in the USA Healthcare (Sickcare) system that looks like it can alleviate the quagmire we as US citizens are currently stuck with.
It will become obvious the most important and underserved player in this 3 party system is the 1st party—the individual or “Health Consumer”. To this end the measurement and assessment of the individual for pre-disease states and genomic testing is the most untapped resource. Driven by cost, risk, intervention, worried well, anti-aging or higher quality of life, the many “Healthy” consumers are looking for a consumer friendly interface into medical science. Fueled by exponential growth of genomics, biology, and digital networks like the internet, the management of a WellCare state for the individual is a complete new market or “Value Chain” that introduces the need for Consumer Driven Testing (CDT), either for monitoring states of health or looking for maximizing Health potential.
This Wellcare industry is already flourishing, with many companies having been in CDT for years and now with the internet it is growing dramatically .
